As the East African integration process continues, Tanzania has been a guarded partner much to the disappointment of many of its other East African Community (EAC) partners.

The authors used the (location) distance of where Tanzanians that participated in the Afrobarometer Round 5 survey are relative to the borders of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi as a proximate measure of social interaction. They then estimated the relationship between the distances to the borders and individuals’ knowledge, approval of, and perceptions of improvements of the proposed East African federation.
