REPOA's 15th Annual Research Workshop March 18th – 19th 2010, Dar es Salaam REPOA's Annual Research Workshop has grown to be the largest and longest running annual event hosted by a Tanzanian research institute. This year, REPOA celebrated its 15th Annual Research Workshop (ARW) on March 18th – 19th at the White Sands Hotel in Dar es Salaam.
The objectives of this keynote annual event are: - disseminating research findings as a contribution towards policy making, - providing peer review as capacity building for researchers, and - providing a networking forum for debate and dialogue among stakeholders. This year’s theme was Kilimo Kwanza: Promoting Agriculture for Economic Transformation in Tanzania.

The Opening address was presented by Honorable Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mizengo Kayanza Peter Pinda who was the guest of honor to the eventHon. Prime Minister remarked that the Government of Tanzania has always recognized that it is fundamental to address the Agriculture Sector as the weapon to combat poverty because poverty levels are highest in rural areas where the predominant activity is agriculture. The Prime Minister challenged REPOA and the research community to tune Research and Development activities to solving the practical challenges that our farmers and the Country face in modernizing the Agriculture Sector through Kilimo Kwanza.’ He also urged REPOA to critically work at the challenges facing the Agriculture sector (in its broad perspective – Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Beekeeping; and undertake research on value chain from production, processing, and marketing, and advise the Government accordingly. The Keynote address was given by Prof. Hans Binswanger, Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria.
The workshop continued with 20 other presentations given predominantly by recipients of REPOA research grants. These researchers received feedback on their projects by participants and by formal technical review teams. REPOA’s Annual Research Workshop plays an important role in the capacity building of these researchers. More than 250 participants attended this year’s workshop, including 8 from overseas and 40 from outside Dar es Salaam. Participants came from the research community, academia, central and local government, civil society organisations, the private sector, and development partners. Top of Page
